What the Federal Awards Data Really Tells Us (And Why This Matters)

I want to talk about something that almost nobody in federal construction actually looks at — the distribution of awards — and what it tells us about opportunity. One of our guys, Fahad, ran an analysis on 200,000 federal awards. This isn’t opinion. This isn’t marketing. This is raw data. Here’s what it showed. The Numbers (Straight Up) - 200,000 total federal awards - 45,000 different vendors - But the work is not evenly distributed When you break it down: - Top 1% of contractors performed 86,654 awards - That’s about 450 contractors doing nearly half the work - Top 5% (about 2,250 contractors) did 129,943 awards - Top 10% did 146,729 awards - Top 20% did 162,735 awards Let that sink in. A very small group of contractors is doing most of the federal work. What This Means (And What It Doesn’t) This does not mean: - The system is rigged - New contractors can’t break in - You need political connections - You need to be huge What it means is this: Federal construction rewards contractors who know how to stay in the system. Once a contractor figures out: - How to find work consistently - How to bid without fear - How to perform without creating problems - How to communicate with contracting officers - How to document and get paid correctly They don’t just win once. They win over and over again. That’s how you end up in the top 1%, 5%, or 10%. Why Most Contractors Never Get There Most contractors: - Bid one or two jobs - Don’t win immediately - Get discouraged - Decide “this isn’t for me” - Go back to commercial work They never build a pipeline. They never build pattern recognition. They never stay in long enough for momentum to compound. Federal construction is not a lottery. It’s a repeatable process. The Opportunity Hidden in This Data Here’s the part most people miss. If 450 contractors can do 86,654 awards, that tells us something important: There is no shortage of work. There is a shortage of contractors who know what they’re doing.
