The $25,000 to $100,000 Federal Job — Small Contracts, Huge Margins
By Sean & Doug Reitmeyer — GCExperts. Written from real contractor conversations, calls, and workshops.
When people imagine federal construction, they imagine a billion dollar airfield. Let me tell you where the smart money actually is: jobs ending from $25,000 to $100,000.
Here's the math as I teach it in the workshop. Is a $50,000 job a great job? By itself, not really. But look closer: the profit margin on those jobs is huge, and the risk is so low it barely registers. We were putting 70 to 80% margins on our commercial jobs of that size. Now stack it up: 30 to 40 of those every year, each one a real contract, each one finished, each one public record on usaspending.gov. That's not thirty small jobs. That's thirty pieces of recent, relevant past performance, and past performance is the currency of the federal market.
The big jobs get the crowds. A hundred contractors chase the airfield, the margins get squeezed to nothing, and one change order can eat a year. The small jobs get ignored, because the big players can't be bothered — and that's the gap you walk through. Low competition, low risk, high margin, and the government pays on schedule.

There's another reason I deliberately ran that volume, and it's the part nobody tells you: I was doing 30 to 40 contracts every year so I had a lot of recent, relevant past performance. When a bigger opportunity came, and the government had to choose between me and some guy with one old job in his history, the choice was already made. Every small job you finish is a vote you cast for the next bigger job. The small contracts aren't the consolation prize. They're how you build the record that wins the large ones.
So the playbook: find the $25,000 to $100,000 jobs in your trades, the ones the big guys walk past. Price them honestly with real margin, because the competition is thin and the risk is low. Finish them clean, on time, on budget. Do it 30 times. Then look at what you're eligible to bid — the set-asides, the past-performance filters, the work that wants a contractor with a stack of recent, relevant wins. That's when the small jobs turn into the big ones.
The government doesn't reward ambition. It rewards a record. Build the record.
