I wrote a book!

Here’s the prologue PROLOGUE By August of 2005, my dad and I had completed over a billion dollars in federal government construction contracts in our combined careers. It wasn’t something we celebrated or stopped to admire. It was simply the cumulative result of decades spent building America’s infrastructure — project after project, agency after agency, year after year. Around that same time, my life changed in a way no contract ever could. It was a hot summer day on Lake Travis in Austin. My brother and I lived two doors apart back then, just like we promised each other we would when we were kids. Most childhood dreams fade. Ours didn’t. We made it happen. We both owned boats, lived about a mile from the lake, and spent countless weekends out on the water. That day, I was out in Devil’s Cove with friends. I’d tried calling my brother throughout the afternoon, but he never picked up — which was completely normal for a day on the lake. After spending most of the day tied up with other boats, the people in my boat decided we were hungry and wanted to head over to Carlos and Charlie’s for dinner and drinks. As I idled out of Devil’s Cove and into the main channel, that’s when I spotted my brother in his boat with his friends, coming in from another direction. I waved him down and yelled: “Hey! Come to Carlos and Charlie’s with us — I’ll buy dinner for everybody!” He smiled, shook his head, and said: “Nah — we’re going to Café Blue.” And that was it. Just a moment between brothers on the lake. A moment I replay more than I’d like to admit. Hours later, after dinner, my friends and I anchored in a quiet cove. We relaxed, talked, had a couple of beers. Then we noticed something far across the water: Police boats. Red and blue lights flashing in the darkness. Spotlights sweeping back and forth. A cluster of emergency activity. We didn’t know who it was for. We didn’t know what had happened. We didn’t know how close we were to tragedy. Eventually we headed in, trailered the boat, and went home.
