Five Practical Ways to Get Started in Government Contracting (When You’re Stuck or Overwhelmed)

If you’re trying to get into government contracting and you feel overwhelmed, frozen, or unsure where to start, you’re not alone. I see this all the time. There’s no shortage of information out there. The problem isn’t access — it’s action. Most people never fail because they’re incapable. They fail because they never take the first real step. Every journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. You don’t need to master everything. You need momentum. Below are five practical, real-world actions you can take to get out of your head and into the game. 1. Respond to Sources Sought Notices I’m leading with this one intentionally, with a small disclaimer. If you’re already bidding contracts regularly, I don’t recommend spending much time responding to sources sought notices. But if you’re brand new — your SAM registration is done, your CAGE code is active, and you’re just sitting there — this is a powerful way to get moving. Responding to a sources sought notice forces you to: - Review a real federal opportunity - Evaluate your capabilities honestly - Create or refine a tailored capability statement - Answer agency questions - Communicate directly with a contracting officer or specialist Most sources sought notices do not require pricing, which removes one of the biggest mental roadblocks people have early on. You’re practicing the same muscles required for bidding, without the pressure. This step alone can pull you out of fear mode and into action mode. 2. Email (or Call) a Contracting Officer About a Live Solicitation The fear people have around contracting officers is wildly overblown. They’re people doing a job — not gatekeepers waiting to punish you. Find a live solicitation and ask a legitimate, informed question. It could be about clarification, the small business point of contact, or an item not addressed in the posted Q&A. Once you exchange a few emails, something shifts mentally. You stop imagining and start interacting. Bonus points if you call. The goal isn’t to get all the answers verbally — it’s to normalize engagement. One real conversation can permanently break the fear barrier.
